Here’s a before and after: the sky over the Imperial War Museum North’s new decking (which they’re promoting for use at events and the like) as it was on the day of shooting, and then after a post production tinker. Could almost pass for a balmy summer evening. British weather, finally subjugated.

Jason Lowe, rising star and player for Blackburn Rovers. Not being much of a follower of football I don’t know much about him – other than that he looks like 20 year old, but talks like a seasoned pro, and he doesn’t much enjoy having his picture taken. I suppose that second part is my fault.

Well, he’s 81. The incredibly vital Les Scaife, who was diagnosed with cancer – but then asked various questions on his age. It relates to an ongoing story about how cancer treatment is linked to age, rather than fitness. Les doesn’t look a day over 60.

Though it’s said ‘all they do is kick a ball around a field and get ten grand a day for it’, I must admit after the amount of charity appearances they make they’ve probably got no time off whatsoever. Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney here, playing a game of table tennis with a group of very well behaved schoolchildren for Sport Relief.

This was featured in the Metro newspaper, and it’s visible here. It credits me as working for PA, though eerily.. I wasn’t.

One Foot in the Rave

An introduction… these are pictures from the aptly named ‘Hardcore Till I Die’ or HTID event that took place in Newquay this weekend. I knew about rave back in the mid-90s and it seems little has changed – the style of MCing is the same, people bring anything fluorescent, and the 180 beats per minute music doesn’t stop – not ever. Even when you wake up confused at 8am, somewhere in the distance there’s a sound of thunder.

If you’ve ever been to a rave then most of these will be familiar sights. Maybe even the man raving in a swimming pool – and definitely the guy in a polo shirt and basebal cap. Definitely him.

Here’s the small class I’ve had at Stockport Academy. The class is called ‘Enrichment’, and the aim is to introduce the pupils to new ideas outside of what the school can provide. I’ve been there the last three weeks, for just an hour a week, explaining the basics of putting together a news picture. They’ve taken the pictures on whatever they’ve had around – principally mobile phones and compact digitals. For that very reason I’m not able to showcase everything that was taken.

The first assignment was to take a picture illustrating a story about a burglary, where something of sentimental value was stolen. Our first story is that our man’s dog been nicked – look at that expression, and the empty lead in his hand! – and the next was Mum’s raided jewellery box, using a mirror as an adventurous framing device.

The next assignment was a happy news story – so an experiment in creating a different tone. Again the story details were up to them, but the tone needed to be ‘happy’ since local news stories do usually come in only two flavours. Our first is a picture of Rowan’s guitar – Rowan does like guitar music, though I did explain that news pictures really need a person in them…

…. then we move onto the missing dog’s glorious homecoming…

… and in keeping with the missing animals theme, though Mum has lost her jewellery, look who found his way home.

I know a few local newspapers that would switch their staff photographers for these in a heartbeat, though of course, the company Ford couldn’t leave the drive…
